Men’s Shed

Springburn Park Men’s Shed welcomes all men over the age of 18. Voluntarily run by the men, a
place where they can socialise and work on projects or hobbies. A place to help others or to get help,
play a game of cards, relax over a tea or coffee, have a laugh with new and old friends and maybe
create something for yourself or our local community in our workshop.

Our Men’s Shed is split into several areas, a social area, a woodworking shop, a metal fabrication
shop, a display/shop area and an outdoor area for horticultural activities. We are situated at the
centre of Springburn Park and have an Auditorium, Community Building, Bowling Club, Cricket oval
and other sports facilities on our doorstep, as well as fantastic walks and scenery all around us.
Men’s Sheds started over 20 years ago to help retired men improve their lives in Australia. There are
now over one thousand Men’s Shed’s in Australia and that number is increasing all over the world
and spread to the UK several years ago.

A few surveys have already taken place here in the UK, including Age Scotland, and Glasgow
Caledonian University is currently carrying out a 3 year survey in conjunction with the Scottish Men’s
Shed Association. The Age Scotland survey named “The Shed Effect” is a 30 page document which
includes interviews with ‘shedders’ from 8 different Men’s Sheds across Scotland. Key observations
emerging from the survey were; the pride, passion and positivity people displayed in talking about
their shed, and the care and affection they showed for their fellow shedders. How keenly observant
people are of the benefits they are experiencing, and the insight they have into what others are
getting out of attending the shed. How the same place, people and activities can offer such rich and
diverse benefits for individual shedders. How strongly common themes emerged across sheds,
despite there being great differences between the types of sheds.

Springburn Park Men’s Shed is the newest Men’s Shed in Scotland are we are looking for more
